Sapporo snow festival (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri 1) began spontaneously in 1950 by a small group of high school students who started making snow sculptures. In time it grew, the japanese Self Defense Force (SDF, you can see the structure they built and saluting in  the pictures above), several groups and the public joining it.

1. Yuki Matsuri. yuki = snow, matsuri = festival

my own metamorphosis ~ from a psychrophobe to a psychrophile + snow sliding @ sapporo

Prologue:
Remember the day when you set your foot at Sapporo? It was 2 years before, on a cold February, just like this. Snow was something new and strange then, and you were happy. First few days are always like that! *snow everywhere* and you will start smiling and laughing, it was so fun.. The Dean asked you how you felt abt Sapporo. You said beaming, snowflakes allover your cheeks, "I love the snow! It is so beautiful here!" He roared out a laugh, "snow has no value here!".

"but I love snow!!?"

So first few days were spend analyzing the so-called-snow, eating it to your heart’s content.. Later you learnt that you could better sit at home and watch those japanese comedy shows (and start laughing whenever they laugh..)

Well my (shifting to first person) first 2 winters went like that, good-for-nothing. Sat indoors for 4-5 months till I made sure there’re no white patches watching me. But this winter, one day while coming to lab, got soaked in the snow and like a revelation from heaven it transformed the psychrophobic 1 me to a psychrophilic 2 self! Thatz how my bicycle started slowing down on my way to lab. Thatz how soon a camera was hanging on my neck, swinging all the way but keeping an eye on things going around,,

So am not so fed up of winter, you see.. Though all my insects and butterflies are hibernating, I managed to find some amusement in the snow.. and thatz how I ended up taking all these winter photos.

So, the photojournal for the day:
Caught ‘em from my window first. They had spotted the snow-mountain (some snow heaped over) in our compound and had decided it is the perfect place for snow sliding.
  • Kids never stop amusing us!

Moral of the story: Always smile at the snow, some day it will start smiling back at you.

1 psychrophobe: one who dreads the cold
2 psychrophile: those like me who loves extreme cold
3 sensei: japanese for teacher

metamorphosis of my bicycle

  1. When it all started.. just a few days into winter. My new bicycle was up and the old bicycle down (far end).
  2. Snow swallows everything, my bicycle too.. A faded memory of my oldie (far end).
  3. Is gone! Is gone! (sounds like I was waiting to see it gone )
  4. My new bicycle undergoes the same fate

Wish I could get my tropical sun back..
"Fall leaves as soon as leaves Fall" (you can read that backwards but still end up with winter

reborn into the tropical sun

Posted by rocksea on 06 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: life

Is sunny and bright outside. Though I miss the tropical sun, today it seems am content with the sun. Why today suddenly itz so sunny and bright?? Only because I woke up early today.. hehe. (Remember Late Kate? Kate was always late..)

Well, yesterday night it was around -13 ~ -15 °C by the time I went home (2am. ya, late to bed, late to rise). So once I reached and was at my apartment, felt am in kinda Ice Age. This is what they call a frozen moment, ya? Switched on the heater, but what use.. From -15 to +15 is a whopping 30 °C; it takes time!. Switched on the electric blanket too. No use! Got my neck thru one more sweater.. BrrrRRrr.. still no use! As a last try I meditated on the tropical sun, how I had jumped around, screeching like a monkey in those days (will I ever get them back).. Ain’t remembering anything beyond that. Memory must’ve freezed out?? Well it worked.. Was reborn in to this sunny day today
